Thelma Jones

Thelma Bradshaw Jones, 91, of High Point, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at GrayBrier Nursing Center.

She was born July 7, 1921, in Rockingham County, a daughter of John A. and Mamie Perdue Bradshaw. She was a former employee of High Point Enterprise for 26 years and Adams Mills for 16 years. She was a member of Highland United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James E. “Earlie” Jones; a daughter, Bernice Brown; a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter; three brothers, J.C., Paul and William “Pete” Bradshaw; and two sisters, Sarah Taylor and Elise Stiles.

Surviving are three sons, Roger Jones and wife Gayle of Jacksonville, Fla., Jerry Warren Jones of Wallburg and Larry Jones and wife Brenda of Trinity; two daughters, JoAnne Jones of High Point and Dawn Tilley and husband Mike of High Point; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Inez Sexton of Maryland.

A celebration of life service was held Sunday, Jan. 13, at Highland United Methodist Church.

Burial was in Floral Garden Memorial Park.

Michael Royals

Michael Van Royals, 60, of Archdale, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at his home.

He was born June 22, 1952, in High Point, a son of Robert Van Royals of Archdale and the late Mildred Cagle Royals. He was an Army Military Police veteran having served 1972-1974. He was a member of Trinity Memorial United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Peggy Reece Royals; two sons, Brandon Royals of Archdale and Robert Royals, currently serving in the Air Force in Biloxi, Miss.; two grandchildren; a sister, Sandy Staton and husband Sherman of Archdale.

A celebration of life service was held Saturday, Jan. 12, in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. Burial was in Floral Garden Memorial Park.

Nickey Kinley

Nickey Cicero Kinley, 54, of Sophia, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Duke University Hospital.

He was born March 17, 1958, in High Point, a son of George Bulla and Lossie Brann Kinley. He was a self-employed furniture salesman. He formerly attended Fairview United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are eight sisters, Bernice Gray and husband Larry, Judy Canter and husband Melvin, Barbara Atkins and husband Ken, Kathy Patty and husband Darrell, Lisa Roberts and husband Danny, Velvet Walker, all of Archdale, Dee Holt of Denton and Kim Kinley and Randy Bryan of Sophia; two brothers, Terry Kinley of High Point and Glenn Kinley and wife Carolyn of Sophia.

A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 18, at Fairview United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

James Garwood

James David “Dave” Garwood, 51, of Sophia, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Randolph Hospital.

He was born in Mocksville a son of James and Dot Garwood. He was a member of Sawyersville Wesleyan Church where he was a Sunday school teacher and sound technician. He worked as a radio disc jockey for 19 years and volunteered at JoyFM Radio on Saturday nights. He was a former county committee member for Relay for Life.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Surviving are his wife, Angela Davis Garwood; and his mother of Mocksville.

The funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 12, at Sawyersville Wesleyan Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Charles Boyles

Charles “Charlie” Bulla Boyles, 81, of High Point, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013 at High Point Regional Hospital.

He was born June 8, 1931, in Randolph County, a son of Roba and Myrtle Coltrane Boyles. He served as vice president of Griffin Upholstery and was an Air Force veteran. He was a member of Fairfield United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher and active in the choir and men’s club. He also sang with the Fairfield Quartet, Soldiers Again and Led By Him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Taylor Angel; and two brothers, Roba Boyles Jr. and Leon Boyles.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Griffin Boyles of the home; two daughters, Christy Angel and husband Kim of High Point and Lisa Kiser and husband Curt of Archdale; a son, Chuck Boyles and wife Missy of Archdale; a brother, Jerry Boyles and wife Dyanne of Archdale; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Fairfield United Methodist Church. A private burial was held in the church cemetery.

Patsy Earnhardt

Patsy Richardson Earnhardt, 75, of Oak Island, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at New Hanover Medical Center.

She was born July 29, 1937, in High Point, a daughter of Lacy Howard and Stella Rush Richardson. She was a Baptist.

Surviving are her life-long friend, Mike Roomian of Oak Island; five children, Robert Earnhardt Jr. of Raleigh, Jeff Earnhardt and wife Bernice of Trinity, Ricky Earnhardt and wife Kellie of Benson, Tammy Tart of Oklahoma and Cindy Earnhardt of Thomasville; two sisters, Joyce Grant and husband Wilfred of Greensboro and Sandi Steed and husband Ken of Missouri; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the chapel of the Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. Entombment was in Floral Garden Memorial Park mausoleum.

Evangeline Ussery

Evangeline Hiatt Ussery, 77, of High Point, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital.

She was born July 4, 1935, in Martinsville, Va., a daughter of Mack M. and Sarah Ann Hundley Hiatt. She was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her parents; former husband, Farrell Gray Ussery; a daughter, Lisa Tempkey; a brother, Marshall Hiatt; and two sisters, Josephine Walker and Virginia “Jenny” Perry.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Pittman and husband Doug of Thomasville; two sons, Billy Ussery of High Point and Christopher “Chris” Ussery and wife Towana of Archdale; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Monday, Jan. 14, at English Road Baptist Church. Burial was in Floral Garden Memorial Park.

Phillip Gunter

Phillip Hobson Gunter, 76, of Archdale, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Rowan Regional Hospital.

He was born June 13, 1936, in Stokes County, a son of Dewey and Beulah Lavender Gunter. He was the owner of Phillip’s Custom Upholstery and was a Baptist. He was a disabled Air Force veteran having served in the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Madie Hill Gunter; two sons, Steven Michael Gunter and wife Donna of Archdale and Phillip Ray Gunter and wife Cathy of Thomasville; a brother, Donald Ray Gunter of Missouri; two sisters, Peggy Whitt of Charlotte and Janet Gunter of Atlanta; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

George Shelar

George Washington Shelar, 90, of Grays Chapel, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Heartland Living and Rehabilitation Center.

He was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Wilson Shelar.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anna Smith Shelar; a sister, Lois Shelar; and brothers, Dallas, Paul, Randall, Harvey, John and Elijah Shelar.

Surviving are a daughter, Cathy Holman (Steve) of Durham; two sons, Gerald Shelar (Debbie) of Georgia and Eddie Shelar (Sherry) of Liberty; a sister, Dovie Smith of Francisco; brothers, Bernie and Claude Shelar, both of Sophia; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Saturday, Jan. 19, at Fairview Cemetery in Liberty.

Naomi Stanley

Naomi Crooks Stanley, 85, of Sophia, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, on her birthday.

She was born Jan. 10, 1928, in Sykesville, a daughter of Erasmus Asbury and Sally Myrtle Morris Crooks. She retired from Lorillard after 30 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ray Tate.

Surviving are her children, Beverly Campbell, Darlene Beal and husband James, Barbara Eanes and husband Scott, Talmadge Stanley and wife Bettie, Ray David Stanley and wife Brenda and Randy Stanley; a brother, Ed Gunter of Maryland; 14 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

The funeral was held Monday, Jan. 14, at Faith Baptist Church in Greensboro. Burial was in Lakeview Memorial Park.

Ethel Williams

Ethel James Williams, 85, of Randleman, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Woodland Hill Care & Rehabilitation in Asheboro.

She was born April 30, 1927, in Taylorsville, a daughter of Bynum and Addie Mitchell James. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willie Duckery Williams Jr.; a son, Donald Williams; sisters, Nell Davis, Pauline Harrington, Marie Scott, Ruby Adams and Mozelle Daniels; and brothers, Ned, Lee and Fred James.

Surviving are seven daughters, Diane Carpenter of Sophia, Connie Loflin of Denton, Kim Scott, Brenda Brady, both of Randleman, Kathy Jarrell, Yvonne Wilkerson and Tonya Pollard, all of Asheboro; two sons, Jimmy Ray Williams of Asheboro and Michael Williams of Denton; a sister, Shirley Yow of Seagrove;19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 19, in the chapel of Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Gladys Herlocker

Gladys Marie Brown Herlocker, 86, of Asheboro, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Woodland Hill Care and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Randolph County, a daughter of Eugene Elliot and Lena Allred Brown. She was a member of Asheboro Friends Meeting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ray Boyce Herlocker Jr.; and siblings, Luther Brown, Bertha Brown and Edna Hodgin.

Surviving are a son, Donald Austin Herlocker of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; siblings, Colin Brown, David Brown and Violet Brown Cox, all of Sophia, and Ruth Brown Ingold of Asheboro; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Wednesday, Jan. 16, in the chapel of Pugh Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Randolph Memorial Park.

Harold Burgess

Harold Wayne Burgess, 72, of Archdale, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013.

He was born June 29, 1940, in High Point, a son of James Harold and Flossie Tucker Burgess. He retired as a chief petty officer from the Navy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carole Rose Burgess; and a son, Harold Wayne Burgess Jr.

Survivors include a daughter, Joni Whittington and husband Jimmy of Archdale; a brother, Charles Edward Burgess of Liberty; a sister, Toby Johnston of Orlando, Fla.; two grandsons and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Wednesday, Jan. 16, in the chapel of Sechrest Funeral Service in Archdale. Burial was in Oakwood Memorial Park.

Sandra Maxwell

Sandra Gail West Maxwell of Lexington died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Hinkle House in Davidson County.

She was a volunteer for Hospice and Meals on Wheels. She was born in Kinston, a daughter of Oliver and Alma West. She was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Lexington.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward West.

Surviving are her husband, Greg Sowers; two children, John Sneed and wife Kristy of Wilmington and Kimberly Magee and husband Billy of Lexington; six grandchildren; siblings Earl West and wife Marie of Virginia, Ray West and wife Brenda, Jean English and husband June, all of South Carolina, Lynwood West and Judy of Archdale, Doug West and wife Kris of Tennessee and Danny West and wife Pam of Greensboro.

A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 18, at First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Lexington.

Barbara McNeill

Barbara Fuller McNeill, 71, of Trinity, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Hospice Home at High Point.

She was born Feb. 9, 1941, in Henderson, a daughter of William Albert and Florence Collins Fuller. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William Hartwell “W.H.” Fuller.

On Jan. 25 1979, she married Randy Lawrence McNeill, who survives of the home. Surviving also are two daughters, Cynthia Liggon and husband Robin of Oxford and Robin Ann Hawthorne and husband Drayton of Southport; four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

The funeral was held Monday, Jan. 14, in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. Burial was in Fairview United Methodist Church cemetery.
